Co-creating regenerative and inclusive futures at the New European Bauhaus Festival 2026

TIMBERHAUS, INHERIT and EHHUR will join forces in an interactive workshop exploring how heritage, regenerative materials and community participation can shape more sustainable living environments

Three ICONS projects – TIMBERHAUS, INHERIT and EHHUR – will come together at the New European Bauhaus Festival 2026 for an interactive workshop organised by Fondazione ICONS.

Titled “Co-creating the Future of Living Heritage, Regenerative Materials and Inclusive Cities”, the workshop will take place on 11 June 2026 at 14:15 in the NEB Academy Piazza. The session will invite participants to explore how communities, designers, policymakers and innovators can collaboratively shape more sustainable, inclusive and beautiful places in line with the values of the New European Bauhaus.

The workshop will build on the complementary experiences of the three projects, where TIMBERHAUS will showcase its vision for regenerative and circular construction systems based on timber and bio-based materials. By promoting innovative wood-processing technologies, circular design approaches and sustainable use of timber resources, the three projects aim to reconnect buildings, people and nature while contributing to Europe’s green transition in the construction sector.

Using an adapted version of the Ikigai method, participants will engage in a hands-on co-creation process inspired by real-life urban and territorial transformation challenges. Through role-play activities and collaborative mapping exercises, attendees will take on the perspectives of different stakeholders – including citizens, municipalities, designers, community organisations and entrepreneurs – to collectively imagine future scenarios for sustainable living environments.

Each project will contribute a specific perspective connected to the NEB values:

  • TIMBERHAUS – reconnecting with nature through regenerative materials and circular timber construction;
  • EHHUR – prioritising people through inclusive urban regeneration and participatory design;
  • INHERIT – strengthening belonging through living heritage and cultural identity.

The session aims to move beyond purely technical discussions and foster a broader reflection on how sustainability, inclusion and aesthetics can become part of everyday experiences and decision-making processes. Participants will be invited to reflect on what communities value most, what challenges need to be addressed, what resources can support transformation and how long-term change can be sustained over time.

A collaborative “Ikigai canvas” created during the workshop will remain accessible throughout the Festival as a living installation, allowing visitors to continue contributing ideas and reflections on the future of Europe’s built environment.

The workshop forms part of the broader programme of the New European Bauhaus Festival 2026, which brings together citizens, researchers, policymakers, artists and innovators to explore new ways of living that are sustainable, inclusive and beautiful.
